Raising Support
As a student of the SGT you are responsible to raise your own finances for the school. We understand that raising money can be challenging, but it is also one of the most rewarding experiences to see how God can provide for your needs. An important thing to remember is that God is able and wants to provide for you. His very name is “El Shaddai,” the God of more than enough.
Here are some ideas to help you get started in your fundraising efforts. Remember, do what is possible, and let God do the impossible.
Write a Letter
Writing a letter is one of the most effective ways to raise support for the SGT. A good way to start is to think of 300 people. Think you don’t know 300 people? Think again. Don’t limit yourself to just friends and family. Send letters to everyone you can think of - the worst they can say is that they have no money to give. Ask them to pray about whether or not God is leading them to support you. If they say no that is OK. God knows who he wants to be involved in providing for you. Also, don’t forget to send Thank You notes to those who have given.
Raise Your Own Money
Working and saving towards your school is a very practical way to raise funds. You may also consider sacrificing some activities that cost you money, like trips to coffee shops, eating out and going to the movies. Also doing odd jobs like babysitting, chores and mowing lawns, is another good way to raise money for your school. Present the job as an opportunity for them to donate to missions and allow them to hear from God as to how much to give you.
Speak to Your Church
Check with your pastor to see if you are able to speak in front of your church. Some churches will even conduct a special offering to help students raise funds. You can also attend small group functions to talk about the SGT and raise support. Being accountable to leadership about a desire to attend the SGT may help open the door to sharing about your school with the congregation.
Advertise Your School
Most churches have bulletins, notice boards, newsletters etc. These are all great places to advertise your SGT and provide information on how to give.
Have a Fundraising Event
From dessert banquets to car washes to bake sales, fundraising events are an excellent way to raise money.
Frequent Flyer Miles
Some airlines will allow the transfer of frequent flyer miles to other individuals. If you have to travel to get to the SGT check with your airline to see if you may be able to receive donated miles. You can let people know that this is another way they can support you, by donating miles.
Sponsorship
Many businesses and corporations set aside money each year for donating to various causes. Check with local companies to see if they will sponsor you or contribute to your school. Remember, a person or company does not have to be Christian to support you.
